(Hunucmá)
Population: 28.100 inhabitants (2005)
The name of the town of Sisal (Hunucmá) in Mayan language means “water of the marsh”. Much accurate datea is unknown.
Hunucma being head of the municipality of the same name, in pre-Hispanic times belonged to the province of Ah-Canul and after the conquest was made under the regime of parcels from which you can mention that of Doña Beatriz de Montejo in 1571. The evolution of population and municipal administrations begins in 1821 when Yucatan declares it’s independence from the Spanish Crown.
